How bespoke design small websites can make a real impact

Over the last year, we’ve been involved in a series of massive megaprojects. For varying very sound reasons, each will launch when all the team are ready, or the content is perfectly prepared. I’ve learned these things take time. Yet, amid these juggernaut undertakings, smaller, more lithe piece of work have woven their way into our schedule. They sometimes take just a few short weeks and are usually simple brand design briefs combined with a simple bespoke design small websites, often just one page. And they are deeply satisfying.

In this post I’m doing a roundup of three recent projects we’ve completed, one a redesign of a site we completed years ago for a successful local business, the other two are entirely new projects for very different startups.

What makes each compelling is the way small spaces have been made to work so hard – sometimes just a single page. Often a massive stylistic impression is made with great photography, video and messaging, sometimes with a gutsy use of typography. Each keeps things simple in their own way, yet manages to make every corner of the site earn its keep.

Say it with flowers: London Wisteria Company

It’s strange but true: this one-page website is one of the most successful projects we’ve ever been involved with. Put simply, it has delivered customers who need a service from a fantastic provider. It looks great and ‘just works’: you can’t say fairer than that. Of course it helps that London Wisteria Company is exactly the three words that their target market are searching for…

We first completed one of our bespoke design small websites for London Wisteria Company some eight years ago – and it’s testament to the success of that piece of work that many of the elements from that design are retained in our gentle reworking which launched this summer. Where we’ve added to it is with both a personal message (and photo we shot) from founder Chris O’Keefe and a press section which we will gradually expand in the coming months as a PR campaign rolls out.

The pull of wool: Boodlah

We were approached in the summer of 2019 by Jane Hines who had a creative concept for Boodlah, a business selling accessories decorated with classic needlepoint designs. The pandemic derailed things for a while as the manufacture of the bags became increasingly complex, but by spring of this year, supply chains were restored and the Boodlah website went live.

There are two key differences between this project and the other two I’m discussing in this post. The first is that the others are single pages, whereas this has more of a structure, particularly thematically. The second is that you can buy Jane’s beautiful products directly using an inexpensive Shopify plugin. Yet the project remained lithe and simple with real impact.

For me, the concept of bespoke design small websites is delivered on an entirely different level by Boodlah, and despite being but a few pages in size, allows an entire commercial enterprise to operate under its umbrella.

Reel estate: the cinematic Babila

Of these three projects, this is is the most recent. Babila is a commercial real estate startup focussing on personal service and deep sectoral expertise both here in the UK and across Europe. Our visual approach for the business was formed from a very clear brief – namely that the type should be bold and decidedly cinematic. The website fulfils that ambition by using video, showcasing what’s possible with good ideas and vision for brand.

We purchased a series of pieces of dramatic London-based video and sewed them together as the stop-in-your-tracks lead panel to the site. Then, below it a series of sections gradually reveals Babila’s unique selling point, services and expertise. The left hand panel lists calls to action and floats down the page as you scroll, highlighting each as they come into view.

The Babila project is what really inspired this post, the epitome of our work devising bespoke design small websites. It’s gutsy and clear, forming a fantastic launchpad for a startup business with ambition.
