The Joaninha Trust

The word ‘joaninha‘ in Portguese means ‘ladybird’ and was the name Joan (Lady) Nixon, used for her charitable trust.

Lady Nixon had a passion for music, in particular opera, and was inspired by Dame Kiri te Kanawa to start a financial support scheme supporting young and emerging talent in the opera world. Each year The Joaninha Trust gives a one-off prize to an outstanding young musician.

The purpose of the award is to provide help in continuing specialist professional studies, carrying forward important personal vocal or language tuition and auditioning for roles or further full time study.

Our new website for the Joaninha Trust uses fabulous photographs from the archives of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, a couple of which are reproduced here. It also lists all previous winners, has a profile of a few of those, as well as a tribute to Lady Nixon and her husband.
