Bexa approached us with a breakthrough technology, a handheld mammogram device that was radiation-free and pain-free, but faced a massive challenge. The communities who needed it most were precisely those hugely resistant to traditional mammography because of fear, stigma and deep-rooted barriers to healthcare access.
Our brief began with a retention of their longstanding logo, blended with fresh, accessible website design. As we embarked on the project, we felt that every design choice should serve a specific user need: photography showing women of all ages, sizes, and ethnicities; images of women embracing from behind so faces weren’t required but profound support was communicated; muted, calming palettes that reduced anxiety rather than amplified clinical sterility.
We learned that designing for healthcare across diverse American communities requires understanding specific emotional barriers in ways that go far beyond demographics. It demands recognising that medical technology, however revolutionary, faces resistance rooted in lived experience, cultural context, and historical healthcare inequities.
